Choir News

Winter / Spring 2008

Christmas has rushed past; we have held our AGM and we are heading into our busiest year for a long time. Besides our two formal Christmas concerts we sang carols at Truro's Railway Club, Tregolls Manor Residential Home, and our regular 'watering hole ' the City Inn. In addition and a first time for us, we sang at Tescos Truro on the Saturday before Christmas. The feedback from the Store Manager was that we were a treat for all concerned and more importantly they have invited us back.

We entered the Cornwall County Music Festival in March and were awarded  a ’90-Outstanding’ mark in our MVC Class as well as two cups for the Best Adult and Best Choir Performance in the Festival, which means we can truly call ourselves ‘County Champions’. For more details and photos  see our Press Releases below. Our Plans for the rest of 2008.include a trip to Belgium.
In addition we are delighted to announce that will be hosting the internationally famous Morriston Orpheus MVC in Truro on 1 November next. In between all that we are performing at a range of concerts with amongst others Camborne Town Band, Barnstable MVC and Stithians Show. All details to be found on the 'Future Concerts' part of this website.

Choir numbers continue to grow and we are particularly pleased that our membership now includes three fathers and sons. (See our Press Release and photo below). Although we have two focused recruiting evenings in the year, we are always delighted to receive interested potential singers on a Thursday night at Truro School Chapel. It is great to see that the 'Cousin Jacks', boys choir of Richard Lander School which has been run for the last twenty five years by Russell Pascoe have now established their own website ( See the 'Links 'section of our website). As the Male Voice Choir of Truro we can guarantee any 'retired Jacks' a warm welcome and a great opportunity to continue their 'singing + fun' careers.

LADY COUNCIL CHAIRMAN ENCOURAGES YOUNG MEN TO JOIN CHOIRS
Press Release 16th August 2007.

Doris Ansari, Chairman of Cornwall County Council and Vice President of the City of Truro Male Choir is quoted as saying "Following the focus that the Cornwall International Male Choral Festival placed this year on young men singing, I am delighted that the choir has taken this message to heart and is having success at recruiting these young singers".

Some of the young men of this 60 strong choir are here pictured with Paul Triggs, the choir's Musical Director. He is a father figure in choral terms to them all and literally to two of them. The choir has very much a family feel with several father and son members. You'll be able to sample that familial atmosphere when the choir sings informally on the Cathedral steps during the morning of Saturday 25th August 2007.

Of course, anyone who thinks they might enjoy singing with them, are very welcome to sit in on any regular Thursday evening practice at Truro School Chapel, particularly on 13th September 2007, which will be an 'open evening'.

Apart from a full schedule of concerts for the rest of this year (six in fourteen weeks from 5th September), the choir has a busy programme next year, including a concert trip to Belgium in the autumn.

Outstanding Choir Thrilled!
Press Release 15th March 2008.

City of Truro Male Voice Choir competed last week in the 98th Cornwall County Music Festival in Truro Methodist Church. The choir entered the Male Voice Choirs (Championship) Class for which the winning choir is awarded the Holman Cup. Their competition pieces were ‘The Gospel Train’ (arr Gwyn Arch), ‘In St Paul’s (Arthur Warrell) and ‘An American Trilogy’ (arr A Humphreys).

Mark Tanner, the Adjudicator gave the choir’s performance a score of 90. This mark falls in the highest category of award and equates to ‘Outstanding’ which is defined by the British and International Federation of Festivals marking system as ‘an exceptional performance, both technically and artistically’. In summing up the three pieces of music, Mark’s comments included “Rousing, Catching, Magical, A full rich texture and still reverberating in my ears!” Based on this performance, the choir was asked by the Festival to return and provide the finale to the final Gala Concert on Saturday evening.

Having been awarded the Holman Cup, Paul Triggs, the Musical Director said, “The choir has put a huge amount of work into preparing for this event and I am truly proud of them and the performance they gave”.

John Larke, Choir Chairman said “Whilst our vision is to be the most entertaining choir in Cornwall, it is important for us to be seen to be participating in this major musical event in our home city. We are absolutely delighted with this result”.

The age range of the choir is from 13 to 86 year of age and they can be seen singing and fund raising at 10.00 am on Easter Saturday at Tesco’s store in Truro, and will be in concert next at the Penventon Hotel, Redruth singing for the Inner Wheel on Thursday 10th April commencing at 7.45pm.
